SimCCS

CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) Infrastructure Decision Support

SimCCS, funded by the U.S. DOE's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, is an optimization software for integrated system design that enables researchers, stakeholders, and policy makers to design CCS infrastructure networks. Over a decade of development, SimCCS has been upgraded to version 3.0. Compared to SimCCS2.0, SimCCS3.0 integrates multiple new capabilities including multi-scale modeling, temporal modeling (i.e., SimCCSTIME) and environmental & Justice modeling. Accessing user-provided CO2 source, sink, and transportation data, SimCCS creates candidate transportation routes and formalizes an optimization problem that determines the most cost-effective CCS system design. This optimization problem is then solved either through a high-performance computing interface, or through third-party software on a local desktop computing platform.

Finally, SimCCS is written in Java and is publicly available to encourage collaboration and community development.

Capabilities

  • Capture Model (NICO2LE): understand commercial-scale capture opportunities.
  • Cost Surface Model (CostMAP): allows users to input multiple GIS data layers and to set weights and rules for developing a weighted-cost network.
  • Network Model (SimCCS): identify likely corridors; develop candidate pipeline routes for optimization engine; identify optimal pipeline routes.
  • Storage Model (SCO2T): rapidly calculate realistic injection & storage & costs.
